Birthday Oops...

I messed up on Aaron's birthday. It was today and not Sunday. That will teach me to count with my right hand - being left handed and all. It seems like only yesterday when I called him on his birthday...

I hear he took off of work for his 40th and played golf. I also understand he played a 90 year old guy. The good news is that he won - his first golf win, I think, but he is only 40...

Regardless of the details, I am very happy he is doing so well at his age and hope he has many, many more happy birthdays.

October Newsletter Article...

Meditation

By Lanny Keithley

Throughout this year, my articles have focused on freeing up the mind to limit the negative aspects of your life and increase the positive ones. They have offered suggestions in dealing with difficult areas of life and making the best use of your available resources. This month's article will address the tool to help make your mind function better and more clearly in any and all situations - Meditation.

In my experience, few topics have had more negative and misleading information distributed about it than Meditation. Most folks don't know what it is except that it is a bad thing. Most of this ignorance comes from it being viewed as mystical, religious, and foreign in nature. They might link it to the crazy, long haired, bare footed, and robed Hari Krishna people that lived in airports chanting and begging for money, decades ago. Or, they might envision some cult, or remember the old Transcendental Meditation stuff that was so popular with the Beatles and all the folks on the "A List" back then. All of these things are from an era that many people would like to forget.

In my church a few weeks ago, my Pastor was talking about a friend of his, that was known to the congregation, and mentioned that back then he was into Meditation. The crowd made this "o that's too bad" sort of groan, which impressed me. The subject has been out of the news for many years, but folks still have this negative attitude about it - whatever it is...

So, I am writing this month's article about Meditation to provide a realistic understanding about what it is and what values it can offer to everybody. It has been one of the most valuable tools in my life and can also be in yours, with very little work involved to learn or practice.

To start, we must understand what Meditation really is - and what it is not. It is one of the most simple self help tools that exists. I can completely define it in one sentence, are you ready for it? Meditation is focusing the mind on one, and only one, thing. There, that wasn't so bad was it?

There are no social, political, organizational or religious parts to it at all. It doesn't require any tools or props to do it and it can be done without any formal lessons or training, though there is a lot of information available out there that can be used to provide an overall understanding. There are also training classes available for learning "How" to meditate, but regardless of the path you take, it really comes down to one thing - stopping and focusing all the thoughts that are usually going on in your mind.

It is something that is done only by one's self, and cannot involve anyone else, by definition. Anybody can do it that has the ability to think and it will provide wonderful benefits to any and all that practice it. It doesn't take years of practice before you gain the real benefits of doing it, as so many other activities do. You realize tangible benefits each and every time you do it - even from the first time. Do I have your attention now?

First, let me explain the benefits and values you get from practicing Meditation. In many of my previous articles, I have mentioned or eluded to the concept and value of mental 'free time' - time that you are not feeling it necessary to think or be concerned about many other things than the one thing you are currently doing. In today's time and lifestyle, most folks are constantly worrying or thinking about many different things all the time. This is tiring, frustrating, and ends up causing problems - both physical and mental in nature. And, the insidious part of all this thinking and concern is that it is almost entirely negative in its results, while detracting from the one thing that you are actually doing at that given moment.

The most dramatic illustration of this concept would be something like text messaging while driving. Most people would agree that is not good. But, those same people, while not really doing the texting, will allow themselves to be thinking about it and a few other tasks that might need to be done. These "extra" thoughts detract from your concentration on the real task at hand, that being driving your vehicle, in this example, and can have the serious consequences to you and others around you.

Meditation is the tool to train and teach your mind to focus on the one thing at hand, and not continually get involved and consumed in all the things that your mind feels might need consideration for the future. It's very simple to do and the benefits are immediate, so let's get into how it works.

You need to be in a quiet place with minimal distractions. This will make it easier to concentrate. Then, you need to select one thing to focus on. This can be anything that you can visualize, but not something that you would analyze in thought. You wouldn't want to pick something that had many facets or features that you might end up pondering on individually. This is to keep your focus on a single thing/concept and not think or change your mental image of it. Some classic objects include a candle flame or a single thing of nature. When, you select a real object to focus on, this is called 'with Seed' in the meditation world, the seed being the object you selected. There is also meditation 'without Seed'. This is focusing on nothing, or no specific object. You can focus on the red light you see when you close your eyelids, for example - which is what I usually use. Anything will do as long as it is something you can focus on, without producing thoughts.

No matter how you choose to do it, the technique, effort and result is the same - to keep all your concentration focused on the object you have selected. As you are focused on the object, you will find your thoughts wandering off onto other things. When this happens, just mentally say 'no', and refocus on your object. It will happen over and over again at first, and can be frustrating, but keep at it and you will be rewarded. It is said that the mind is like an impatient child that doesn't like to be told what to do, and must be dealt with accordingly. When the child drifts away, you must sit them back down and re-focus them on the task at hand. Soon, the child will learn to obey. The mind is no different than the child, as it is use to having its own way.

After some time, which can vary from moments to many minutes, depending upon your mind's level of acceptance and your evolving ability to focus, you will enter a very calm and peaceful state of relaxation. This is the State of Meditation and what this is all about. This 'place' is very enjoyable and desirable, as you will see once there. Stay in this state as long as you can. The longer you stay in this state, the better and more relaxed you will feel.

After you have enjoyed this state for whatever length of time you can spend, it is wonderful to use this heightened state of awareness to work on specific things you might desire. It is a very creative place and you have much more of your mental capabilities available to you then. If you are a religious person, it is a good time for spiritual work.

When you do stop your meditative state and continue on with your normal activities, which you just do by picking up with what you want to do - there is no trance or anything like that at all. For something so maligned in our society, there is no downside to Meditation. It is something you can do almost anywhere, anytime, and for any length of time. It can be used to bring you mentally back to a focused state, when you are out and about dealing with the craziness of today's high speed world.

The feeling of peaceful calm relaxation in this state of heightened awareness will stay with you a little while at first and will continue to grow in length over time. You will be more competent in anything you do and will have your mind focused on doing the task you are working on. You will feel better in all aspects of your existence.

Wrapping up the Summer...

The weather is getting cooler by the day, it seems. And, this weekend, there is suppose to be a storm with lots of rain and wind. Big fun...

Pam put an ad somewhere and ended up getting two local high school guys to come and do yardwork. So, this week, they have pretty much cleaned up all the estate grounds and have done a great job. Next week, they are going to put down weed cloth and rocks on the landscaping burms. It should turn out well.

I again played in the Tuesday night 9-ball tournament and came in 2nd. I should have won it, but my back started acting up and I ended up turning a 4-0 lead in a final match into a 4-5 loss...

Also, I have signed up for two new fall/winter pool leagues. I played the first match on Thursday night and did well. Its a 8-ball league that we travel to all sorts of local bars in the area, which is always big fun.

I have been developing some special fishing line needles, I make from tubing used for medical hypodermic needles, for this very specialized hollow spectra braid line I use for sturgeon fishing. This line is used a lot in East coast ocean fishing. They are a real challenge to make and I have sent out samples to a couple of online dealers. If it goes well, I will probably be making and selling them to a number of dealers and fisherman over the winter, while its too cold to fish here.

Pam is doing better with the braces. She has been working in the 'online chat' support area at Dell this week, so she can reduce her speaking, and associated pain, as much as possible. It seems to be getting better as time goes on.

This Sunday, my OLDEST son, Aaron, turns 40 years old. I am blown away by this event. It seems like only yesterday when I was 40 years old, well, maybe the day before yesterday. Acutally, I cannot remember it at all, but having a son that is THAT OLD is concerning. So, happy birthday Aaron!! He doesn't look a day over 39...

All week, I have been working on getting all the stuff done that has been put on hold during all the visitors and summer fun. I have fixed two toilets, done lots of computer and paper work, wrote my monthly article, and all sorts of fun stuff. In the process, I was working on upgrading the little Micro SD cards we use in our cell phones and my GPS unit. I was removing one of these little cards from its full size 'mother ship', and it went 'sprong' and I heard a click when it hit something in my office desk area. I have spent over two hours trying to find it without success. I cannot figure out where that little sucker went, but I guess I will have to go through every piece of paper to find it. Its amazing how much of a hassle this is turning out to be...

I installed the new wireless routers and all went well. We now have great wireless coverage thoughout the house. There is this one 'issue' where it now takes about twice as long to load pages from the internet, but I am sure I will figure it out soon. The new router in the living room, with the seven internal antennas, has this circle of blue led lights on top that report the various antenna activity, and are quite a light show to watch when things really get boreing here in DaHo...

Braced for Cooling Weather...

The tempature has dropped about 20deg since all the company left. When Oliver was here, it was usually over 100 and now its been in the low 80ies and even 70ies. Which is good news for the time being. Its just too hot to be doing much when its over 100deg here. And, this cooler weather should trigger the fish to start loading up on food before the upcoming cold winter tempatures set in and they basically hibernate through the winter. They actually don't hibernate, but being so large, they get very slow and sluggish and cannot compete with the smaller fish for much food, or that's what I am told. I guess they are on it, whatever it is, as they have been around longer than most other species and doing well.

Anyway, I am hoping to get in some really good fishing from now until the first really cold spell, which last year, stopped the fish from biting. All that being said, I went fishing two days this week and didn't catch anything - Grumble, Grumble...

My back has been feeling a little better lately, which is great news. I keep getting these little bouts of muscle spasms, but all in all, it has been much better than before the epidural shots.

I went to play in the weekly 9-ball tournament Tuesday and again a lot the good players were there. I was playing ok with a few episodes of weirdness - sorta like my back and probably linked to it - and ended up coming in 3rd. So, all in all, it was a successful night, but I should have won it...

We got this new wireless router that was on sale from Buy.com that has 7 antennas and a little blue led light for each one in a circle on the top of the unit. They light up when the specific antenna is being used, I guess. It really improved the wireless reception around the house and was on sale referbished for only $29.99 with free shipping. I am liking Buy.com more and more since we have no local stores to get such things at good pricess. Now the challenge is the take the old wireless router and use it to replace the 8 year old Linksys router up in the wiring cabinet which has been acting up and the reason for all this upgrade stuff in the first place.

As has been cronicaled here for some time, Pam has been preping for getting braces on her teeth. This is something that should have been done many years ago, but wasn't, for whatever reasons. Anyway, all the prep work was done and the braces were finally installed this week. She was very excited about finally getting them installed and I am glad we can finally get-er-done, as they say here in DaHo.

They are quite a challenge to maintain. Anytime food touches your mouth, you have to go through this complete ordeal of brushing, cleaning and flossing them, which can take considerable time and effort. Then there is the pain from the inner mouth skin that is being scrapped and poked by all the new hardware with every facial movement. I have never had braces, but it looks really nasty painful to me. She has to pack wax around the braces to try and keep the sharp hardware away from her tender skin as much as possible. Being a phone support technician is probably not the best job to have until this all settles down a bit, but it will all work out and she will make it through all this like the trooper she is.

Well, I guess that is about all the news that is fit to print here from DaHo...

Returning to "Normal"...

Yesterday, was a big day here in DaHo. Pam's sister Roberta and her husband Vic, came down from the fire ravaged Sun Valley to visit with Pam's brother Mike, his wife Eunsook, and the 4 Foot Longs. They all had a big time and while the Prime Rib was cooking, all got into a great Karaoke session, which impressed us all - one way or the other...

The meal turned out great and everybody had a great time catching up on all the family 'details'. Then, a few hours later, they all left to return to their respective homes and we are again alone and resting.

Calicat is also recovering from having all the dogs here in HER house for a week. She is really pissed, but took it much better than we expected. Actually, maybe shocked, or overwhelmed, is the proper word. After they left, she has been just walking round smelling the dogs and will probably do so for a while. It all really went better than expected, but 4 dogs are a LOT of dog in anybody's book. I have been speaking about the 4 Foot Longs for a week or more, so I thought it would be good to show a picture of them with Eunsook so you can get a better understanding of my comments. Enjoy...

So, its been quite a reunion of the Hainline family here in DaHo. They even got to see their brother, Bobby, the other day at Walmart. We went in there to get some foodstuff and he was checking one of the isles right next to the entryway. He couldn't come to any of the festivities this time, but at least they had a chance to chat together for a few minutes.

It was a good time for all, I think. Coming right on the end of Grandson Oliver's trip was really tiring for me, but, hey, now its over and we had fun and we can rest and relax for the foreseeable future here in DaHo...

Worn to a Frazzle...

After a week of fishing and camping with Oliver, with all the back 'fun' I have been having, and now another week of entertaining Mike, Onesook and the 4 Foot Longs, I am pretty much worn out...

The second back shot I received when Oliver was here worked well for a few days but the pain is back strong over the past few days. I don't know if its just from being very tired and worn or stressed out or what at this point. Spending a few days staring at a blank wall sound pretty good right now.

We have been having fun, seeing a lot of the local points of interest and all that sorta stuff, so I am not gripping about it, I am just exhausted, I guess.

Tuesday night I went out and played in the weekly 9-ball tournament. All of the really good players were there warming up for the upcoming winter leagues that are starting in a few weeks. When I got there to practice, I was playing horrible since I hadn't even thought about pool for almost two weeks. I was playing Rob, a local player and friend, and I think he beat me like 19 of 20 games we played. It was ugly. Then, Steve and other players showed up and my play just got worse. My back was really bugging me besides just not being able to concentrate on the game.

Anyway, the tournament started and my first match was against Rob. I beat him like the proverbial rented mule, getting a lot of lucky help from somewhere. Then, I played a couple of more matches and won them pretty easily. Then, I had to play Steve, who beat me like 5-0. He was playing well and when he is playing well, well, he wins - and that is pretty much the name of that tune. I played a couple of more matches in the losers bracket and won. Then, I had to play Rob again and beat him again putting him out of the tournament. He was not real happy about loosing, but who is - Rob is a good guy. Anyway, next, I had to play Tony, who has been an old arch rival in the tournament all year, and after a close match, we won, putting me out and in 4th place. It was a needed escape from the rigors of my Ho hosting duties.

Then, Wednesday night, we all went to Jackpot after Pam got off of work. We had diner at the Cactus Pete's buffet, which was pretty underwhelming, and then gambled for a few hours. We mostly played blackjack and after 4-5 hours of gambling, Pam and I ended up wining a few bucks, even after paying for the buffet dinner and all expenses - So, it was a highly successful 'gambling' trip in my book...

The past two days we have been fishing. The first day we went down to the Hagerman State Fish Hatchery and everybody ended up catching a 4' sturgeon on the lighter tackle, which was fun for all, but we couldn't get any good trout action. So yesterday, Mike wanted to do some trout fishing. We ended up going down to Cristal Lake first and didn't have much luck there. One of the Foot Longs fell into the water, but that was the only real excitement to be had there...

We then went to the hatchery just up the road, but all they were catching there was little trout, so we took off and after some sightseeing and a stop to get a box of Trout Bites, a locally produced delicacy, we ended up back at the Hagerman State Fish Hatchery. This time we fished the upper end of the holding pond, where the output water from the fish pens dumps out and there were a lot of trout of all sizes lurking there. We caught a number of trout, with the largest one getting away when trying to land it without the net I had forgotten in the Jeep. Anyway, we fished there for a while and came home to a meal of Trout Bites, salad and fresh bread.

After dinner, we watched a new movie that Pam picked up at Costco. It was the 'Blades of Glory', which I would have never bought from watching all the hype and PR stuff on it for months. But, I must say it was a great movie. I would recommend it to anyone. The outtakes and extra stuff on the DVD was also pretty good.

Today, they are having the 2nd annual Bridge base jumping festival, which should be worth checking out. Also, Roberta and family are coming down from the fire ravaged Sun Valley to visit and we are cooking up a big Prime Rib dinner for all. Knowing them all, karaoke could break out at anytime and it should be an 'interesting' day here in DaHo...

Rest and Relaxation before the next Visitors...

Well, that went fast...

Yesterday, Pam's Brother Mike, his wife and their 4 wiener dogs arrived to visit for the week. As you can probably imagine, CaliCat is ecstatic about having 4 dogs in the house...

So far its been a mess, but I am sure it will all work out somehow with time. Mike and Eunsook are good people and it will be fun. Its just a real challenge having that many dogs in a one Cat House...

They got here yesterday and we went to the last day of the Twin Falls County Fair for a few hours. Mike had one the 'unique' culinary delicacies they have there - the famous Tater Pig... I am not sure why they aren't world famous, as they are quite simple. You drill out a Ho potato and insert a sausage in it. They you bake them and top them as desired. It was their dad's favorite fair food...

We checked out all the fun 'fair' stuff, like the animals and booths of amazing fair products and services.

After the fair, we went to Flora's grave and they put some fair purchased lawn ornaments on the grave. Today, we are going back to put on some flowers for her birthday.

Pam is starting to get her braces work done today by having some spacers or something installed to spread out the teeth. It doesn't sound like much fun to me...

As has been lately, it was way too hot to be doing outside stuff, but I hear that all that is about to change with a new weather front coming in for a few days.

Well, I must do my yoga and get ready for all the day's Ho'tivities...

We are Back Home...

We are back from camping at Bliss. Oliver caught a 4'er and a 6'er. Pam caught a 6'er and I caught a 4'er. On the charts, a 4'er weighs in around 50lbs and a 6'er is over 100lbs, so they are not your 'average' or 'usual' fish by any means.

Oliver was great and excited as you might guess. His 4'er was caught at night which makes it a little more surreal and strange. The 6'er was hooked as Oliver was out on the Honda so I tried to keep it occupied until he returned. He was a tough one but had gotten a little tired waiting for Oliver. But, he still gave Oliver a run for his money, as it were.

Pam's large 6'er was also a feisty one. She took it on from the start and wrestled it in the whole way, with fake nails flying along the way. We had to strap a fighting belt onto her in the middle of the fight which really helped in the long run was quite funny during the process. She fought it long and hard and it about pulled her in a couple of times. Her arms are still store from the battle.

I will add pictures when I have more time and my hands heal up some. Between the rigors of camping and all that 'fishing' my hands are pretty ruined at the moment. Keeping 4 rigs going for two days has a way to taking its toll on your fingers, using the heavy weight lines.

It was way too hot, but besides that, it was big fun. The Honda Mini-Trail was used by both Oliver and Pam many times. And, there were all the exciting and challenging moments that always happen during such events. We had a couple of intense and very short term storms blow through with very high force winds that took some time to recover from and various varmits to experience and deal with that you find in the wild, including: numerous snakes and reptiles, a pack of weasels, and millions of night bugs that would swarm and engulf any light source and its holder.

We had gathered a large quantity of fire wood so we had a good fire most of the night and morning which was fun. Friday night, we cooked sausages on the fire while fishing that were very good. Then, Saturday morning, Pam fixed us a great breakfast of sausage, eggs, potatoes, onions, Jalapeno peppers and whatever stuff was in there, burritos. Great stuff.

We, well I, packed too much stuff as usual, but we ended up using most of it and were missing some things that I didn't bring. But, they were few and far between in keeping with the old family tradition that "Any thing worth doing, is worth overdoing"... Luckily, I had also brought a Jeep-top cargo net that allowed us to put a lot of gear on the roof top on the trip home, as without that, we would have never made it back in one trip.

It is now 4:40am on Sunday and it is time to get ready to get Oliver to the airport in Boise. His plane leaves at 8am and you are suppose to be there an hour early, and its a two hour ride there, so we must leave here by 5am.

More to follow on all of Oliver's big Ho fun when I heal...
